The Effect of Online Reviews on Movie Box Office Sales

Due to the rapidly growth of social media, potential moviegoers always depend on online reviews make their purchase decisions. Film companies need know what aspects will drive sales up or down. This study proposes a framework which integrates an aspect-based sentiment analysis and econometric modeling explore relationships between information features in movie ticket sales. The empirical results indicate that whereas rating does not matter affect revenues, additional textual review, both positive negative contents, have impact moviegoers, further prompts revenues. These findings significant implications for producers as well advertisers target promotions at audience accordingly.
